Tea Tree Oil | Nature’s Strongest Known Antiseptic

The History of Tea Tree

The benefits and potential of tea tree oil  (distilled from the Australian Melaleuca alternifolia shrub) have been officially recognised by the scientific community for more than 80 years, but the indigenous people of New South Wales had known about its healing and disinfecting properties for many centuries beforehand.

Australian Aborigines treated cuts, burns and wounds by crushing tea tree leaves and spreading the pulp over the affected area, creating a poultice that helped to fight infection. They were known to chew on the leaves and inhale the volatile oil from the crushed leaves to alleviate colds and other respiratory disorders. It is thought that they would also bathe in the creeks and rivers where tea tree leaves fell, believing the waters to hold healing powers.

The Benefits of Tea Tree

Tea tree oil is now one of the most well-known and most studied essential oils in the world. Extensive research has recognised the many healing qualities of tea tree as the perfect natural solution to a variety of skin and healthcare needs. The oil can be found in everything from toothpaste to shampoo and is the bedrock of the original Outback Organics range, where we only use pure, organic tea tree oil of the highest quality.

Tea tree is an antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral and is also a natural sanitiser. It can be used to treat countless skin conditions, including acne, cuts, scrapes, insect bites and minor infections.
