Why Is Aloe Vera Good For Sunburn?
Aloe Vera is well known as a great product to use after sun exposure, but lets look at why that is. Firstly, it has a very high water percentage, making up around 99% of the content of pure aloe gel. This makes it feel very cooling on the skin (particularly if it's stored at a low temperature, such as in the fridge) and also offers hydration to the skin.
Aloe contains a compound called alloin, which is anti-inflammatory. This helps to calm the skin and reduce the redness associated with sunburn. It also contains anti-oxidants that help to repair damage and strengthen the skins barrier. It is best taken directly from the leaves of the plant, but where that's not possible, a gel with a high aloe content is your best choice.
Our Outback Organics Aloe Gel has a high aloe percentage and is also boosted by the addition of beta glucan, a compound found in oats that acts as an alterantive to hyaluronic acid. Deeply moisturising, it provides a barrier to the skin to protect and prevent moisture loss while also reducing redness and roughness in the skin.

The best way to treat a sunburn is not to get burned in the first place! Stay out of the sun while it is at its strongest, keep covered and use a high factor sunscreen. Don't forget that the sun is stronger in early summer (May/June) than in later months and isn't directly connected to the temperature, so you'll still need protecting on cooler, breezy days.
